Its been a long long time since I last updated this blog and now that my life is a little more calm again I thought I’d start it back up.
But first a summary of some of the films of note that I’ve seen recently.
The Lovely Bones - ★★★★★ – Mind deadingly saccharine; Laughably disappointing.
Invictus – ★★★★★- Disbelief never suspended, plods like a prop.
It’s Complicated – ★★★★★- What is wrong with Steve Martin’s face? Zero care in these old folk rutting.
Sherlock Holmes – ★★★★★- Quintessential Boxing Day film. Guy Ritchie not writing his own scripts is his only future.
Fantastic Mister Fox – ★★★★★- Bizarre script to subject matter to intended audience equation. Tastes like Fanny.
Transformers 2 -★★★★★ – An act of coitus interruptus over a copy of Playboy after shafting the petrol tank of a rusty old banger.
A Single Man – ★★★★★ – Elegant, seductive, passionate, authentic.
Ponyo – ★★★★★- Less awe-inspiring than in the past; a correlation with western accessibility.
The Road – ★★★★★- Gripping bleakness.
The Men Who Stare at Goats – ★★★★★- Neither hide nor hare of an actual plot, more suited to being an anecdote.
The White Ribbon – ★★★★★- A quiet rural village’s sinister prologue to Germany’s brutal past.
A Prophet – ★★★★★- A rare gem that transcends the world cinema section. À l’ombre de Shawshank.
A Serious Man - ★★★★★- The Coen brother’s Tanakh.
Precious – ★★★★★- A gander at the epitome of abject existence.
An Education – ★★★★★- Oh I say how very English. Performances > Story.
The Hurt Locker – ★★★★★- Stressful nihilism.
Up in the Air – ★★★★★- Hunky Clooney Clunky Movie.
Inglourious Basterds – ★★★★★- Christoph Waltz dominates the collection of riveting set pieces.
Excellent, I haven’t seen any of these yet and have been intending to. Although I probably won’t bother with The Lovely Bones if it really is that shit, I liked the book maybe that’s enough. Will definitely watch A Single Man, the White Ribbon and A Prophet and keen to see Precious but I don’t think I can face the Hurt Locker quite yet.
What about Avatar and An Education have you seen them?
